Embracing Challenges: My Journey to Becoming a Nurse's Assistant in Switzerland

Writer's picture: Stacy ClellandStacy Clelland

Imagine stepping into a classroom where everything—the lectures, materials, and discussions—is in a language you don't fully speak.

How would you feel?

What would you do?

Would you stay, or would you excuse yourself from the experience?

This has been my reality since I began pursuing my certification as a nurse's assistant in Switzerland. The entire course is conducted in German, a language I am still learning.

At first, I felt overwhelmed and out of my depth. I found myself translating course materials, using a translator app during class, and devoting extra time to language lessons—all while memorizing industry-specific terminology.

Honestly, it’s hard work, and some days I struggle a lot!

Facing the Challenge Head-On

Despite the hurdles, I made a conscious choice to face this challenge. Instead of letting self-doubt take over, I embraced the discomfort as an opportunity for growth. Immersing myself in the language, I engaged with classmates and instructors, despite the communication barriers. This experience has not only expanded my vocabulary but also opened doors to new networking opportunities.

As I reach the halfway mark of my course, I’ve been reflecting on this incredibly difficult yet rewarding journey. Here’s what I’ve realized:

1. Opportunities for Learning and Growth

Moving to Switzerland has presented many challenges, but I’ve seen each one as a chance to learn and grow. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I’ve discovered new capabilities and strengths within myself.

2. Building Resilience

This journey has cultivated resilience. Each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and determination. I’ve learned that staying persistent in the face of difficulties is essential for overcoming them.

3. Utilizing Available Resources

I’ve tapped into various tools and resources—translator apps, language guides, and online tutorials. These have been instrumental in overcoming language barriers and gaining confidence in my learning experience.

4. The Power of Support

The encouragement and belief from family and friends have been invaluable. Their support has kept me motivated during challenging times and reminded me that I’m not alone in this journey.

Embracing Your Own Challenges

While this chapter of my life can be scary and overwhelming, I face each hurdle with purpose and determination. Whether you’re dealing with language barriers, career transitions, or personal challenges, remember that growth often occurs outside our comfort zones.

Here are some tips to help you manage daunting tasks positively:

  • Embrace the Challenge: See difficulties as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than setbacks.

  • Use Available Resources: Leverage tools, apps, and support systems to aid your progress and boost your confidence.

  • Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with people who encourage and believe in you.

  • Reflect on Your Progress: Regularly acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small. Recognizing your hard work adds significant value to your journey.
