The Weight of Worry: Why It's Time to Let Go

Writer: Stacy ClellandStacy Clelland

Once upon a time, a psychology professor was teaching stress management to a classroom filled with eager students. She raised a glass of water, and naturally, everyone expected the classic question: "Is the glass half full or half empty?"

But instead, the professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?”

Students gave answers ranging from ounces to pounds, and she smiled before replying:

"The absolute weight of the glass doesn’t matter. What matters is how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it's light. If I hold it for an hour, my arm will ache. If I hold it all day, my arm will cramp up or go numb, and I’ll eventually drop the glass."

She then went on to explain:

"Our stresses and worries are like this glass of water. Thinking about them for a moment won’t harm us, but if we carry them for too long, they begin to weigh us down. Over time, they can paralyze us, preventing us from moving forward."

The professor's point was clear: we must remember to let go of our worries.

Don’t carry the weight of yesterday’s burdens into tomorrow.

If you’re still holding onto yesterday’s stress, it’s time to set the glass down.

This metaphor beautifully illustrates the importance of letting go.

How many times do we carry stress far beyond what’s necessary?

As you go through your day, remember to release those weights.

You are not meant to carry them forever.

What’s one "glass" you’re holding onto that’s weighing you down?

Reflect on it today and find a way to let it go.

The relief might be just what you need to reclaim your energy and focus.
